ITINERARY

Taste of Saigon
4 days/3 nights

Day 1: Arrive Saigon
Arrive at Tan Son Nhat Airport, meet and transfer to your hotel. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing at your leisure. Saigon, with more than 8 million inhabitants, is the country’s commercial center. Despite the well-documented hustle and bustle, the city retains its connections to the past.

Day 2: Saigon tour
Enjoy a 2-hour-drive north west of Saigon to Cu Chi tunnels, through a typically lush southern Vietnamese countryside. This tunnel complex was dug in 1948 for the guerrillas to hide from French air and ground sweeps. The tunnels also served as communication routes, food and weapon caches, and as hospitals and living quarters for guerrilla fighters throughout the American war. Visit the underground villages to better understand the tunnels’ history, life in the tunnels and the Vietnamese people’s resilience during combat. Return to Saigon. In the afternoon, embark on a walking tour to admire Saigon’s historic landmarks including a stroll down Rue Catinat of Graham Greene's 'The Quiet American', which reveals several colonial classics; the Opera House, a three-story classical theatre built to entertain the French colonists (outdoor visit); the former Hotel de Ville constructed for the French bureaucrats of Indochina in 1901, now The People's Committee building with no public access; the Notre Dame Cathedral, a stunningly massive red-brick edifice with twin spires, a clear reminder that French once ruled this city (open only 3-4pm every day, otherwise just an outdoor visit); the Central Post Office influenced by Renaissance architecture; and the former Presidential Palace, headquarters of the Saigon Government during the American war.

Day 3: Saigon tour
Visit the vibrant Ben Thanh market with an experienced local chef in the morning to learn what Vietnamese markets have to offer and select the best ingredients under the chef’s guidance. Then proceed to a private hands-on cooking class. Offering a taste of authentic southern cuisine, this is the chance to use your artistic flair to present your favorite Vietnamese dishes. Sample what you have prepared with the chef for lunch. Take advantage of a free afternoon to wander around the colorful streets or shop at trendy boutiques. Or opt to drive 6km to another district of Saigon, in which most habitants are Chinese, to visit Thien Hau temple, built in the early 19th century by Cantonese. It was built to honor the goddess of the sea and to protect local fisherman. The temple’s interior courtyard is worth seeing with beautiful ceramic figurines and antiques shrouded in incense-smoke. It is always bustling here with worshippers from the local Chinese community. Take the opportunity to write your wishes on a small red note, stick them on an incense coil and pray for your wishes come true. Return to your hotel and relax.
